Frequently asked question:

1)      How to prepare Chestnuts: First soak chestnuts in warm water for about 20 minutes and then make an X on the flat side with a knife. Then

a.       Heat for 5 minutes in boiling water, or

b.      Heat in the oven at 300 degrees F for about 20 minutes, turning occasionally.

c.       Heat them in the microwave at high for about 1 minute

Then remove the shells while the chestnuts are still warm.  Chestnuts require about 30 to 60 minutes cooking time. 

Also chestnuts can be pureed in a food processor.

2)      Chestnuts may be dehydrated, and are rehydrated by simmering them in

water for 30 minutes before they can be used.

3)      Chestnuts may be frozen, by boiling or cooking them first, then remove them from the shell and skin, drying them and placing the chestnuts in a freezing container and freeze. 

4)      How to store Chestnuts: They are a fruit and if left out are very susceptible to

mold, and should be consumed promptly.  Fresh chestnuts should be   refrigerated in order to delay any molding.   Chestnuts will keep longer in a crispy, high- humidified environment, 90% or greater until used.

5)      When we ship Chestnuts they are in a fresh crispy condition, and need to be

       refrigerated immediately.  Before they are eaten it is best to allow them to dry

       slightly – either at room temperature for a few days or a week in a mesh bag    

       in the refrigerator.

6)      Chestnuts are high in carbohydrates and low in fats.  You can eat chestnuts  

fresh or cooked.  They can be used as a snack, appetizer, vegetable, meat

garnish, such as chestnut stuffing and chestnut soup. Also chestnuts can be made in to flour and used for pancakes, bread, pasta and muffins.  Chestnuts can be made into puree and used in yogurt, ice cream, or in other desserts.
